We share the following views on waste and waste management; occupational health and safety management in Nigeria.

Waste Management

In Nigeria annual solid waste burden is put at 60 million tons, with per capital rate from 0.44 to 0.60 ton/year.

  • Since 1960, waste management has very low rating as per our national development plans.
  • Poorly managed waste is a potential threat to human health and the environment;
  • The subject matter is multidisciplinary;
  • Science aspects of waste deals with sources, content, effects and their measurements;
  •  Engineering aspect of waste deals with design of treatment plants, sanitary landfill, high tech equipment and computer-modeling for impact predictions; and
  • Technology aspect is mostly fabrication/construction of engineering designs/implementation.

Safety Management

  • Safety is a major concern in every establishment;
  • Accidents do not just occur, they are caused.  When they occur, may result in fatalities, loss of facilities, life experience & expertise;
  • Topical issues include fire & explosion; safety engineering, road accidents, industrial health & safety, etc;
  • Safety laws (for roads) including drinking and driving, speeding, failure to use motorcycle helmets, seat-belts and child restraints are very poorly monitored and enforced; and
  • The Postgraduate program of COHSE on safety management is tailored to meet the multidisciplinary nature of the subject and its current demands for best practices in the industry.
